Local Medicare help, with your life in mind
Your healthcare choices belong in the same conversation as your retirement date, household budget and the places you receive care. Nick combines insurance experience with a broader financial-planning perspective to help you organize those decisions.
Independent means Nick works with the insurance companies he represents. It does not mean every company or every plan is available through Heartland. The conversation starts with your needs and the choices available where you live.
Where would you like to start?
01 · I'm approaching Medicare
Talk through your timeline, the basic coverage choices and the questions to ask before enrolling. You do not need to understand all the Medicare terminology before we meet.
02 · I'm retiring or leaving employer coverage
Bring information about your current health coverage and expected retirement date. We can identify the enrollment questions to confirm with Medicare, Social Security and your employer's benefits administrator.
03 · I already have Medicare
Bring your current coverage information and any notices you received. We can review your concerns, discuss the options Nick represents and determine what enrollment rules apply before considering a change.
Medicare Advantage or a Medicare supplement?
These are different ways to arrange coverage. A Medicare supplement is not an add-on to a Medicare Advantage plan.
| Original Medicare + Medigap | Medicare Advantage |
|---|---|
| Original Medicare provides Part A and Part B coverage. A separate Medigap policy helps pay certain costs Original Medicare leaves to you. | A private Medicare-approved plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits. Most plans include Part D prescription drug coverage. |
| You can generally use doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare. Check that a provider accepts you as a patient. | Provider networks, referrals and prior authorization rules can affect access to care. Details depend on the specific plan. |
| Prescription drug coverage is generally arranged separately through Part D. Eligibility and underwriting rules matter when buying or changing Medigap. | Review the plan's medical and drug coverage together, including your providers, prescriptions and potential out-of-pocket costs. |
For a fuller explanation, see Medicare.gov's coverage options. Individual policy and plan documents govern coverage.
Use Mayo, Gundersen or another regional provider?
For Northeast Iowa residents who travel for care, provider access deserves a careful look. Tell Nick which doctors, specialists and facilities matter to you, including care in Rochester, La Crosse or Iowa City.
We will identify what needs to be verified for the exact plan and coverage year. A health system's name alone does not establish that every location, clinician or service is covered. Confirm participation with both the plan and the provider before enrolling. Heartland does not claim an affiliation with these healthcare organizations.
What should I bring to a Medicare conversation?
- Your questions and the date you expect coverage to begin
- Names of your doctors, specialists and preferred hospitals
- A current medication list, including dosages, and your preferred pharmacy
- Information about current health insurance and any plan-change notices
- Your travel plans and the healthcare expenses that concern you
Bring personal coverage information to your appointment. Please do not send Medicare numbers, medical details or medication lists through the general website contact form.
Common Medicare questions in Northeast Iowa
Can I meet with a Medicare agent in Waukon?
Yes. Nick Wilz offers local appointments through Heartland Wealth Partners at 504 West Main Street in Waukon. Call 563-794-1859 to arrange a conversation.
Do you help people in Decorah and nearby communities?
Nick welcomes Medicare questions from people in Waukon, Decorah, Cresco and surrounding Northeast Iowa communities. Specific plan availability depends on your home address, county and the insurance companies he represents.
Does fall open enrollment guarantee I can buy a supplement?
No. The October 15–December 7 Medicare enrollment period is different from Medigap open enrollment. Your federal Medigap open enrollment period generally lasts six months beginning when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside protected enrollment situations, medical underwriting may apply. Check your eligibility before dropping existing coverage.
Can you help me understand prescription drug coverage?
Yes. Prescription coverage is part of the discussion. Medicare.gov's Plan Finder can help compare drug plans using your prescriptions and pharmacy. Ask Nick which enrollment services he offers for the coverage you are considering.
Can Medicare decisions be part of my retirement plan?
Yes. Premiums and potential healthcare expenses affect retirement spending. Nick can help connect those questions with your income needs and retirement planning.
A local conversation. A clearer next step.
You do not have to sort through the mail and Medicare terminology alone. Start with the question on your mind.
